"Who are these people?" you may ask. "And what are they trying to do?"

We’re two sisters - two very different sisters - who’ve joined forces to bring you Modern Karibou.

How did we start off and what made us take this leap? We both had comfortable, secure jobs. But that was just it, we wanted something more.

The idea of launching an online store evolved from Carole’s struggles to furnish and decorate her family’s new home and the fact that she couldn’t find what she wanted in Ottawa stores.  Carole loves to surround herself with friends and family and it was very important for her to create a warm and contemporary environment to live in and where people would feel welcomed. She found some items in Toronto and Montreal, but discovered much better selections from U.S.-based online retailers – but that experience was soured by high shipping costs, surprise brokerage fees, and troublesome returns.

Lise, who’s been passionate about modern art and design since her studies in art history, was more than willing to join Carole in her venture. Contrary to Carole who goes straight for what she wants, Lise likes exploring, looking at things from all sides, discussing them and taking her time to enjoy them for what they are. With our complimentary skills, we thought ‘Hey! Why not go into something we really love and are passionate about?’

Did I mention that Carole is the no nonsense direct one, who sets goals and doesn’t let anything get in the way of achieving them? Just a few months after taking the leap, visiting several design shows (Toronto, New York, Montreal and Las Vegas), making new and exciting contacts, and virtually working our fingers to the bone with the design of the Modern Karibou website, we are off! We hope you enjoy the ride!
