Creating an attractive vignette does not take much more than a flat surface, like a tabletop, dresser or bedside table, and a little imagination. Before you rush out to find the perfect vignette components, look around and see what you already have. We love the way something as simple as a vignette can tell a story, or give a quick snapshot of your personality.
Start with a blank surface, and add in objects one by one. A mirror or large art piece can anchor your vignette, but so too can any brightly coloured object. The key is to use a variety of heights and shapes. A tall lamp or vase is an ideal starting off point, while a stack of books looks great and can also be used to add height when placing another item on top of it. Smaller items finish off the look, but be careful not to use too many.
While creating the vignette keep in mind your decorating style and stick to it. If your home is modern, then a monochromatic vignette will work well. Symmetry is key in a formal space, but grouping in odd numbers looks best (3 or 5 objects). Stagger your items and make sure to create depth by placing something in the front, middle, and back of the display. Your design should be balanced, even if it is not symmetrical.
Fresh flowers, plants, or other natural materials are a beautiful way to add the finishing touch to your vignette. They also allow you to bring in colour, or keep with the monochromatic theme. Once you think you are done, stand back and rethink it all. Did you leave some negative space to avoid a cluttered look? Is it picture worthy? Are you happy with the result? If not, simply edit or start again. The most wonderful thing about the vignette is how easily it can change.
