Investing in a large furniture piece can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. With a few simple steps you will be on your way to buying the perfect sofa.
1. Consider the Setting.
Is this sofa going to live in this place for a while? If yes, customize the couch to the space. If not, keep the size and shape under control.
2. Ponder the Purpose.
Sectional sofas are informal and suitable for a family room or lounging space, while a couple of couches are a better choice for a formal living room. In a pinch a well-selected sectional can do double duty pulled apart. Consider whether the chesterfield will be used as an extra sleeping spot.
3. Pick a Colour and Material.
Light, colourful, or dark? It depends if you want a bold pop of bright in the room, or something more versatile like a washable white or a darker, more forgiving tone. Greys are always a safe choice.
4. Ace the Base.
Stainless steel reads as modern and industrial, while wood is classic and warm. Keeping your base simple will allow it to stay current and remain on trend.
5. Keep it Simple Silly.
When in doubt, choose a piece with right angles. The simpler the sofa, the less chance for regret. Take your time, go with your gut, and spend a little extra if it gets you what you want. Quality shouldn't be compromised for the sake of saving a few dollars in the short term.

Mirrored buildings and structures are incredibly fascinating. They have the ability to take on their surroundings like a chameleon and change with every minute that passes in the day. This collection of mirrored edifices is all about refection.
This first image is of a playground structure in Copenhagen that was once covered in graffiti. Now covered in mirrors, this building has transformed into an interactive objet d'art to be enjoyed by people of all ages.
In the north of Sweden, near the Arctic circle, you can stay at this incredible tree hotel. It is almost completely camouflaged in the treetops. This elegant yet simple structure offers 360 degree views.
Science World at Telus World of Science in Vancouver adds a sparkly dimensions to the city's skyline. This Buckminster Fuller-inspired geodesic dome was the 1986 World Fair's Expo Centre. It reads as retro and futuristic at once.
The multifaceted PALÄON Research and Experience Centre Schöningen Spears is built at an archaeological site in Germany where the oldest preserved hunting weapons ever found were discovered.
Metalmorphosis, a 25-foot stainless steel sculpture in Charlotte, NC, is comprised of layers that rotate 360 degrees. Water pours from the head into a fountain at the base. The combination of reflective steel and water is stunning.

Designing a nursery can be a daunting task, especially if your first little one is on the way. With so many considerations when welcoming a new member into the family, it is easy to feel overwhelmed at this busy time. Modern Karibou is here to help! We have tips and ideas for making your nursery a restful place to be.
1. Create an oasis with a comfortable sleeping place.
Pick a safe and attractive crib for your wee one with a quality, natural mattress that allows for proper airflow. This furniture item will typically be the largest in your room so be sure to love it. Bedding adds a punch of colour and comfort without the commitment so it can easily transition from one baby to the next.
Babies don't stay small forever. When choosing dressers, armoires, and change tables it is best to buy pieces that will transition through their life stages. Look for drawers and cupboards for diapers and cleaning supplies. Opt for quality and be sure to err on the side of more storage than you think you may need. You can never have enough space to hide things away.
Babies don't initially differentiate between colours, nor can they see very far at first, but the ability to do both develops rapidly. Give them something to look at. If you don't want to commit to a bright wall colour there are still plenty of options. Wall hangings with bold geometric designs and graphic images are a perfect choice. Hang a mobile or wallpaper the ceiling so your little one has something to look up to from the crib. Modern homes tend to be white, so use accessories and textiles to bring in the bright.
4. Create a relaxing feeding area.
Unfortunately, new parents are guaranteed to be up a lot during the night for a while. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit back and relax. Gliding chairs and ottomans will be your saviours in the middle of the night when it is feeding (or just plain crying) time. A little couch can also serve as a place to lay back and enjoy the new bundle.
Babies sleep. Sometimes this happens at night, but it also occurs during the day. Make sure you have blackout curtains or blinds to block out the sunlight when it is nap time. A night light will help you see in the darkness without startling your newborn. Bright overhead lights are useful during changings, but a table lamp will come in handy when preparing for bedtime.
Jennifer Rose Sciarrino is a Toronto-based sculptor, photographer and installation artist who has successfully exhibited her work in Canada and abroad. Her work could easily be the focal point of a modern home.
