At Modern Karibou we strive to offer the best of modern design to our discerning customers. We are especially proud to be able to work with some of the best Canadian designers making eco-conscious and aesthetically appealing products accessible to our clients. Object Outdoors is a Vancouver-based company creating quality planter products. The company appreciates the value of simple and functional pieces that are of the highest quality and built to last, and so do we. Please enjoy our Q&A with Object Outdoor's Joel Franske.
By producing a beautiful and high quality product right here in Canada, we offer Canadians a more sustainable choice over lesser quality planters, which are often produced off shore. And we have a real pride in hand crafting our product in Canada.
How did the team get into making planters?
We spent years buying and sourcing planters for our sister plantscaping business, never to be fully satisfied. After 3 years of testing different forms, functions and finishes, we came up with the quality product you see today. And then locally we started getting a lot of interest in our products so we decided to start offering it in Vancouver to start. And, the rest is history.
Who makes up the team?
Joel Franske is the driving force behind Object Outdoors and is dedicated (along with partners Phil, Trevor and Ryan) to having our company become Canada's' first choice for premium grade Modern planters.
What sort of exciting installations are you seeing your products used for?
The simplicity of the forms and high finish quality make our planters the perfect choice for many commercial, municipal and residential applications, both indoors and out. That has allowed us to work on some of Vancouver’s highest profile restaurants and most luxurious residential homes. We get to work with very talented designers on a daily basis, that makes us proud to be their choice.
What are your thoughts on being more eco conscious as a business?
It’s definitely a major focus for us at Object Outdoors. We use zero VOC powder coating as a finish, 100% recyclable aluminum, and keep our vendors close at hand. Were proud to say that all our work is done locally, reducing travel and the burning of fossil fuels. Plus our line of planters has incredible longevity, so you keep them for a lot longer than you would any steel or fibreglass planter.
How has working with landscape architects, designers and style-savvy homeowners contributed to Object Outdoors ability to create the highest quality products?
We knew the market demanded a high quality product and that’s what we deliver. We are very fortunate to work personally with, in our opinion, the some of the best designers and architects on the West Coast. This has led us to be able to work on a variety of projects and see the projects through from concept to completion. This insight has enabled us to focus on seemingly simple details, like our fully exposed edge, and its details like that that set us apart. We find that clients who use and spec our products value the form, function and finish of our product. That’s what continually drives us.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
We are exploring opportunities for an eventual line of site furnishings that complement our existing products. We are working on new forms and functions of our planters. So there should be another one or two coming out soon. We are also working on collaborations with Canadian artists (mostly for a line of benches) with the goal of coming up with some inventive and beautiful pieces.
