Designing a nursery can be a daunting task, especially if your first little one is on the way. With so many considerations when welcoming a new member into the family, it is easy to feel overwhelmed at this busy time. Modern Karibou is here to help! We have tips and ideas for making your nursery a restful place to be.
1. Create an oasis with a comfortable sleeping place.
Pick a safe and attractive crib for your wee one with a quality, natural mattress that allows for proper airflow. This furniture item will typically be the largest in your room so be sure to love it. Bedding adds a punch of colour and comfort without the commitment so it can easily transition from one baby to the next.
2. Select storage for the nursery and beyond.
Babies don't stay small forever. When choosing dressers, armoires, and change tables it is best to buy pieces that will transition through their life stages. Look for drawers and cupboards for diapers and cleaning supplies. Opt for quality and be sure to err on the side of more storage than you think you may need. You can never have enough space to hide things away.
3. Use some colour and add visual interest.
Babies don't initially differentiate between colours, nor can they see very far at first, but the ability to do both develops rapidly. Give them something to look at. If you don't want to commit to a bright wall colour there are still plenty of options. Wall hangings with bold geometric designs and graphic images are a perfect choice. Hang a mobile or wallpaper the ceiling so your little one has something to look up to from the crib. Modern homes tend to be white, so use accessories and textiles to bring in the bright.
4. Create a relaxing feeding area.
Unfortunately, new parents are guaranteed to be up a lot during the night for a while. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit back and relax. Gliding chairs and ottomans will be your saviours in the middle of the night when it is feeding (or just plain crying) time. A little couch can also serve as a place to lay back and enjoy the new bundle.
5. Consider a combination of lighting options.
Babies sleep. Sometimes this happens at night, but it also occurs during the day. Make sure you have blackout curtains or blinds to block out the sunlight when it is nap time. A night light will help you see in the darkness without startling your newborn. Bright overhead lights are useful during changings, but a table lamp will come in handy when preparing for bedtime.
