Are you getting tired of a winter that never seems to want to let up? Head south! Sunny Puerto Vallarta is the perfect spot for a family vacation or a romantic getaway. You won’t need much more than a swimsuit, some sunscreen, a few outfits that can transition from day to night, and some shades. Get packing…
PV, as locals know it, has so much to offer. This charming part of Mexico is notorious for glorious beaches, verdant mountains, and an abundance of coastline. If the natural beauty isn’t enough to tempt you, then the world-class restaurants, outstanding accommodations and upscale shopping will.
Puerto Vallarta is a charming, historical city with modern amenities. Charter a sailboat for a day of snorkeling and whale watching, enjoy a sunset walk down the Malecón promenade, and spend your evening enjoying some of PV’s vibrant nightlife. The Wednesday night 'Art Walk' allows you to peruse the local galleries while sipping on a glass of wine.
The weekends are a great time to browse the farmer’s markets where you can pick up unique gifts and sample delicious food. The ocean side ‘Mercado Del Mar’ market is a bit of a drive but has tons of vendors and is the place for fresh seafood. A day trip to the nearby surf town of Sayulita is highly recommended. Walk the vibrant streets and grab a margarita for the ideal laid back afternoon.
There is no reason to stay in Nuevo Vallarta, the new part of town. Instead opt for a hotel or rented apartment in the ‘South Side’ or ‘Zona Romantica’. For an upscale dinner in a perfect setting try the contemporary Blanca Blue with its impressive wine selection and breathtaking views. Hacienda San Angel is a must for a sunset meal. A full mariachi band will serenade you as you enjoy the historic property, look out at the ocean, and take in a view of the mountainside. ¡Buen viaje!
Holiday entertaining can be so complicated, but setting a modern table for the festivities shouldn't be. Modern design dictates that decorating should be simple, functional and pared down. With a few considerations you can easily achieve a modern seasonal table setting.
Choose a colour theme and set the table accordingly. Red and green are obvious choices, but we prefer to choose one or the other with white instead. Putting black and white together creates a dramatic effect and can still be very festive. If you appreciate a little glitter, choose neutrals with silver and gold. Feeling more daring? Try an unusual colour combination like red and blue.
Make sure to keep the table simple with only the necessities and few holiday touches like baubles, monochromatic plants or flowers, and basic decorations. Check out Modern Karibou's table decor offerings to complete the look. Happy holidays!

The plummeting temperatures have me dreaming of hibernating in my warm, comfortable home for the long winter we are certain to face in Canada. Sure, I could bundle up and brave the cold, but getting cozy and taking a nap sounds so much more appealing.
Recently, on a cold wintry day, I recalled an article that I read earlier this year about nap time in Scandinavia. It was published by the BBC and totally amazed me. In it the authour, Helena Lee, talked about how Swedish parents leave their babies outside to nap in sub-zero temperatures and how effective it is for rest time. Parents cited better health and longer sleeps among the benefits of outdoor napping. With a climate so similar to ours, I wonder if this approach may work for our babies too. Would you give it a try with your child?
Brrr! The days are getting shorter and colder. Bundle up
your baby to protect them from wind, rain and snow with a ‘Le Sac Igloo’
designed by Studio 7 A.M. Enfant. We are giving away a large, pink ‘Le Sac
Igloo’ (suitable for 18 months to 3 years) and you could be the lucky recipient. Entering the draw is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
The end of summer is an amazing time for fresh produce. Gardens are overflowing and tomatoes are everywhere. If you are wondering what to do with your abundance of ripe tomatoes, look no further. Properly showcase your surplus by making a delicious fresh tomato lasagna. It is a simple twist on the lovable staple, updated. This dish tastes creamy yet light and oh-so-tomato-y.
You will need:
13 x 9 inch pan
3 pounds sliced tomatoes (a mixture of colours looks best)
2 cups ricotta cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
360 grams fresh lasagna noodles
3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
1-2 tablespoons olive oil
3 cloves garlic, crushed
1/2 cup fresh basil, chopped
1 cup mozzarella, grated
Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix ricotta, egg, some salt and pepper, and nutmeg. Set ricotta mixture aside. Mix basil and garlic. Brush the bottom of pan with olive oil. Layer noodles, half of ricotta mixture, sprinkle with half of basil-garlic mixture, spread out layer of tomatoes, sprinkle with parmesan cheese, salt and pepper. Repeat. Finish with a final layer of noodles, tomatoes, salt and pepper, and mozzarella cheese. Cover with foil with holes poked in it. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15 minutes or until the cheese starts to bubble.
Autumn has a funny way of arriving a little too soon in Canada. Instead of mourning the end of the summer season, get excited about prepping your home for a new one. Colour continues to abound at this time of year and this should be emphasized in your decor. Brilliant brights can be traded out for tones that are more subdued but still pack a punch. Think of the burning oranges and reds of changing leaves - persimmon, saffron, vermilion. They really pop when paired with gray, black and white. Incorporate wooden furniture in rich hues to feel their warmth through the cooler months. Create a current interior as you begin to reach for jeans and sweaters...your home is guaranteed to be just as cozy.

On my way to the market for fresh flowers the other day, I found myself perusing window displays that were all about spring. One in particular jumped out at me - the citrine-infused shop window at Zara Home.
Citrine and yellow shades are popping up all over the place and personally, I love it! Yellow is bright, energetic and vibrant.
Spring is the perfect time to update our living spaces with splashes of colour, nature inspired objects and fresh designs.
